Surrounded by the wooded hills of the pre-alpine region, nestling in the pleasant Wertach valley, lies Kaufbeuren, the centre of East Allgäu. With a population of 44,000 Kaufbeuren is the third-largest independent town in the Bavarian District of Swabia. Once a Free Imperial Town, Kaufbeuren is very aware of its tradition and more than 1000 years of history.
